In 1992, Elein Fleiss published Purple Prose that set a precedent for independent magazines. Since then, she has been publishing independent magazines centering on art and fashion, such as Hélène, The Purple Journal and Les Cahiers Purple. Unlike any existing fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and madame Figaro, the unconventional pages of Purple Prose inspired the fashion scene in Paris. As Elein’s parents ran an art gallery, she was always close to art. Her creativity has produced free-spirited fashion photographs with artistic backgrounds, such as those of Wolfgang Tillmans, Anders Edström and Mark Borthwick. A layer of these art and independent publication fans has expanded, also caused the birth of ZINE culture, which became popular in 2000s. As such independent publication became a movement in Japan, social ripples that Purple created have continued to spread around the world. After publishing Les Cahiers Purple in 2010, Elein concentrated on raising her child. But on the New Year’s Day in 2013, she started the website Les Chroniques Purple. As she lives in a small rural town in France, she introduces the works of about 40 artists on the website, writes essays, and works on articles that are more personal than before. From Japan, photographer Takashi Homma, artist KYOTARO, designer as well as Purple’s ex-artistic director Makoto Oorui, and fashion brand Cosmic Wonder also contribute. The website project has ended on December 31, 2013, archiving more than 400 articles over the year. As it represents Elein’s aesthetics and tight relationships she developed with creators around the world, it concludes Elein herself as her own chronicle.

1992年にインディペンデント雑誌の先駆けである『Purple Prose』を刊行し、以降『Purple』『Hélène』『The Purple Journal』など、アートとファッションを中心とした個人出版の雑誌をつくり続けてきた編集者、エレン・フライスの作品集。 既存のファション誌、『Vogue』『Elle』『Marie Claire』『madame Figaro』、そのどれとも異なる『Purple Prose』の斬新な誌面は、当時のパリのファッション界を活気づかせた。画廊を営む両親の元に育ち、幼い頃からアートに親しんだエレンの自由な発想は、ウォルフガング・ティルマンスやアンダース・エドストローム、マーク・ボスウィックらの、アートの精神を背景に持つ自由なファッション写真を生み出した。アートとインディペンデント雑誌を愛好する人々の層が生まれ、2000年代に入ってから流行した“ZINE”カルチャーのように、インディペンデント出版が現在の日本でもひとつのムーヴメントとなるほど、『Purple』がつくった波紋は今でも世界中に広がっている。2010年に『Les Cahiers Purple』を刊行して以降、育児を中心とした日々を送っていたエレン・フライスが、2013年元旦より自らが主催するWebサイト『Les Chroniques Purple』をスタートした。現在はフランスの田舎町で生活する彼女は、『Les Chroniques Purple』において世界各国40人以上のアーティストや写真家の作品の掲載に加え、自らエッセイなどを綴り、よりパーソナルな記事づくりをしている。日本からは、写真家のホンマタカシ、美術家のKYOTARO、デザイナーで『Purple』の元ADでもある大類信、そしてCOSMIC WONDERらが参加している。2013年12月31日で同サイトのプロジェクトは終了し、丸一年の活動を通してアーカイブされた400以上の記事は、彼女がこれまでに築いてきた世界観や世界中のクリエイターとの密接なつながりを表現するものであり、彼女自身を映し出すひとつの伝記（クロニクル）として完結した。本作は、VACANT とのコラボレーションにより、エレンの最新の活動録である『Les Chroniques Purple』のなかから厳選された記事が日/ 英バイリンガルで書籍化したもの。世界が待望するエレン自身当時約4年ぶりの出版物となり、その日本版発売を記念して本誌掲載作品を展示する展覧会もVACANTにて開催された。
